Mesada is an ancient palace built in the mountains along the Dead Sea by Herod. It was also a small fort on an isolated rock plateau on the western edge of the Judaean Desert. This is the tram you had to take in order to visit.
I went in 1996 and 2000 and the tram was just an option to take up to Masada and back. It wasn't mandatory. I walked up and down both times on the dirt path. Have they made it mandatory to ride the tram?
